George Hearst (September 3, 1820 – February 28, 1891) was an American businessman and politician who built major mining interests, notably developing the Homestake Mine in the Black Hills and listing it on the New York Stock Exchange in 1879.
After settling in San Francisco in the early 1860s, he served one term in the state legislature and was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1886, then elected as a Democrat, serving from 1887 until his death in 1891. His son by a later marriage was newspaperman William Randolph Hearst.
