Anthony Kennedy

Anthony McLeod Kennedy (born July 23, 1936) served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1988 to 2018. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan and sworn in February 1988, he had earlier been appointed to the Ninth Circuit in 1975 by President Gerald Ford and practiced law after graduating from Stanford and Harvard Law.
After Sandra Day O'Connor's 2006 retirement he was often the Court's swing vote. Kennedy authored major opinions in Boumediene v. Bush, Citizens United, Romer, Lawrence, Windsor, and Obergefell, and co-authored the controlling opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
