Barbara Ann Mikulski (born July 20, 1936) served as U.S. senator from Maryland from 1987 to 2017 and previously represented Maryland in the House from 1977 to 1987. A Democrat, she is the third‑longest‑serving female senator and the longest‑serving senator in Maryland history.
Raised in East Baltimore, Mikulski began as a social worker and community organizer, winning a seat on the Baltimore City Council in 1971. She chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee from 2012 to 2015 and joined Johns Hopkins University as a public policy professor after leaving the Senate.
