John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 – December 8, 2016) was an American astronaut, Marine Corps aviator, businessman, and politician. He became the first American to orbit Earth in 1962 and served as a U.S. senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999.
A decorated fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War, Glenn returned to space in 1998 at age 77 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. He received honors including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
