Hamilton Fish (August 3, 1808 – September 7, 1893) was an American statesman who served as New York governor (1849–50), U.S. senator (1851–57), and U.S. secretary of state (1869–77) under Ulysses S. Grant.
He was praised for calm, judicious diplomacy: settling the Alabama Claims by international arbitration, defusing the Virginius incident to avoid war with Spain, and negotiating trade and peace arrangements that earned him recognition as one of his era's most effective secretaries of state.
