Lyndon Baines Johnson (born on this day in 1908; died January 22, 1973) was the 36th president of the United States, serving from 1963 to 1969 after succeeding John F. Kennedy. He had earlier been vice president (1961–1963) and served in both houses of Congress representing Texas.
Johnson's Great Society expanded civil rights, Medicare and Medicaid, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and War on Poverty programs, and he made the Apollo moon program a national priority. His presidency is also remembered for the escalation of the Vietnam War and the political costs that followed.
