Pete Wilson (born August 23, 1933) is an American attorney and Republican politician who served as California’s 36th governor from 1991 to 1999. He previously represented California in the U.S. Senate (1983–1991) and was mayor of San Diego from 1971 to 1983.
As governor Wilson signed a three-strikes law, backed energy deregulation and term limits, and supported Proposition 187. He sought the 1996 Republican presidential nomination but withdrew before the primaries. Since leaving office he has worked in business and is a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution.
