Wilmer Mizell

Wilmer David "Vinegar Bend" Mizell (August 13, 1930 – February 21, 1999) was a left‑handed pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Mets from 1952 to 1962, twice an All‑Star and part of the Pirates' 1960 World Series team.
After retiring, he served three terms as a Republican U.S. representative from North Carolina's 5th district (1969–1975). He opposed the Blue Ridge Power Project, introduced a bill concerning the New River, later held assistant secretary posts under Presidents Ford, Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, and died after a 1998 heart attack.
