James Edward McGreevey (born August 6, 1957) is an American politician who served as the 52nd governor of New Jersey from 2002 until his resignation in 2004 following revelations about a personal relationship and a threatened lawsuit. He was the first openly gay person to serve as a state governor in U.S. history.
McGreevey previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly (1990–1992), as mayor of Woodbridge Township (1991–2002) and in the New Jersey Senate (1994–1998). He published a memoir in 2006 and later worked in reentry programs and municipal employment initiatives.
