He chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2021 to 2023. After Congress, Maloney served as U.S. ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development from 2024 to 2025. He was the first openly gay person elected to Congress from New York State and lost his 2022 re-election bid to Republican Mike Lawler.
