Born on this day in 1752, Samuel Smith was an American statesman from Maryland. He served as a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator and was mayor of Baltimore; he also served as a general in the Maryland militia.
Smith served twice as President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate (1805–1808; 1828–1831) and was the older brother of cabinet secretary Robert Smith. We remember his public service; he died in 1839.
